Committees

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION               

PURPOSE:  Exercise oversight for the organization and leadership of Hope United Church of Christ’s Sunday School, Youth Groups at various ages, and programs, which reach out to the youth in the community.

TASK AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Provide support for the Sunday School leadership as needed and requested.
  2. Provide support and facilitate leadership for youth groups at different levels, as needed, if requested.
  3. Ensure Hope UCC’s Safe Conduct Policy and Procedures are adhered to by all volunteers. In addition, all Safe Conduct Covenant forms and background checks are submitted, received and filed in a confidential drawer in the office, by the first week of the start of the new Sunday School year.
  4. Meet with or communicate through e-mail to Sunday School parents and volunteers as needed, to ensure all are aware of current and upcoming events pertaining to the Sunday School/Youth Group.
  5. Organize and implement: a yearly Sunday School Program; a Vacation Bible School event and a Sunday School Christmas program with the assistance of the Sunday School/Confirmation participants, volunteers and children.
  6. Research and recommend materials for use. Review materials with the Pastor prior to purchase. Ensure all materials are on-site and ready for use throughout the entire Sunday School year.
  1. Address any concerns regarding the Sunday School/Youth Group and/or programs with the Council Liaison or Council President.
  2. Communicate regularly through: a monthly article for the church newsletter Whispers, bulletin announcements and Facebook, as needed.

Pastor:

  1. With the Pastor, recommend policy, structure, and provide support for the Confirmation Program.
  2. Works with and keeps Pastor informed of Sunday School lessons and any Sunday School/Youth Group church participation.

MUSIC & WORSHIP COMMITTEE

PURPOSE:  To support and work with the Pastor to provide opportunities for worship that will help persons grow in their relationship with God, strengthen the ministry of the church, and empower people to live more faithfully as Christian disciples.

MEMBERSHIP:  Three members plus a liaison person from the Church Council.  The Committee will set their own meeting schedule, select their own chairperson and recorder.  One of the church musicians and Pastor will be included in meetings.  Any member joining a Committee must be a member of Hope United Church of Christ.

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Learn about worship and the resources and materials available related to worship.
  2. Support the musical ministry with the use of liturgical arts to enrich the worship life of the congregation.
  3. Plan, schedule, and coordinate special services, guest speakers, and musicians. Provide the necessary microphones and be present at practices as needed.
  4. Prepare and care for paraments and crosses.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

Purpose: To invite people to Christian faith, which is personal, to a faith community, which is communal, and to a life if discipleship min the world, which is social.

Members:  The committee consists of 3 members. Each year, one committee member is rotated off and a new member appointed to a 3-year term.  Must be a member of the church.

Duties of the Committee:  Review the membership roll on a yearly basis and to keep in close contact with new members as they begin their journey with Hope, to answer questions, inform them of upcoming events, and provide them with opportunities to get involved.

PASTORAL RELATIONS COMMITTEE

Purpose: Seeks to support and maintain an open and healthy relationship between the Pastor and the members of the congregation.

The committee will serve in two primary ways: as an advisory group to the Pastor and as support for the Pastor’s leadership. As an advisory group, the committee shares ideas, dreams, hopes, expectations, and concerns of the congregation with the Pastor.

As support for the Pastor, the committee interprets roles, functions, and needs of the Pastor to the congregation.  Constructive and caring communication in an atmosphere of confidentiality and trust is essential to the work of the committee.  This committee is the congregations’ fundamental support group for the Pastor.  It builds the framework in which conflict can be dealt with creatively.  Its goals are the professional growth and well-being of the Pastor and the Congregation.

Members:  The Pastor and 3 lay members of the congregation who are appointed to a 3-year rotational term make up this committee.

HISTORICAL COMMITTEE

Duties of the Committee:

  1. Preserve all old valuable papers that have a definite history of the church.
  2. Plan and prepare anniversary celebration in future years as seem appropriate in conjunction with the Church Council.
  3. Be available to help anyone that might be looking for old records if we are able to.

Members:

Each committee member serves at least a 3-year term. Any member joining a committee must be a member of Hope United Church of Christ.

  • The Committee has gone through old books, records and log books. A laminating machine was purchased in 2008 for the purpose of maintaining old records.  Confirmation pictures are preserved and displayed. Every five years, plans are made for Hope’s Anniversary.  An informative booklet was created “Family & Friends of Hope UCC” and is an ongoing booklet to be added to as new members join our church.
  • In 2024, Hope will celebrate our Sesquicentennial (150th) Anniversary.

FINANCE AND STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE

The Finance and Stewardship Committee is a non-legislative body and works in an advisory capacity to the Council.

PURPOSE:  Committee members of the church “shall aid in securing the funds necessary for the support of the church in its various activities, to foster the principles of stewardship…”  Constitution of Hope UCC.

MEMBERSHIP:  Any member joining a Committee must be a member of Hope United Church of Christ.  The Committee shall be made up of three lay members and a Committee leader, who will be approved by the Council.  The term of the lay member to run for a sequential four-year term.

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develop a budget with input from other Committees and the Council for presentation to the Council.  This budget will then be presented at the Annual Meeting.
  2. Each member of the Finance Committee will rotate as money counters on Sunday mornings.  Schedule is attached.
